Match played: 27 October 2007
On Saturday Portobello welcomed the unbeaten league leaders to Calvary Park in the cup. Facing a stiff wind the home team got off to a dream start when a half break by Dave Hardy allowed Kevin Bulloch into space on the half-way line. His kick ahead was held up slightly by the wind and took a kindly bounce into Graeme Culbertson's arms. The big winger had plenty to do and showed great power and pace to crash over the line with defenders hanging onto him. Connor MacLeod kicked an excellent conversion into the wind. For the next twenty minutes Portobello looked like they were the better side and had Hawick in all sorts of disarray. Unfortunately the home side failed to turn their superiority into points and once again some slack defending and slip-shod tackling allowed the Hawick stand-off to score under the posts for a converted try. Portobello continued to dominate but failed to score and Hawick were to add a penalty before half-time.
Half Time: (7) Portobello vs. Hawick Linden (10)
The second half was more of the same, continued Portobello posession, territory and no points, Hawick had the occasional break out and once again weak tackling allowed Hawick to score under the posts for another converted try. As the game dragged on, Portobello simply ran out of attacking ideas and Hawick gave a lesson in discipline by not conceding a kickable penalty in the whole game.
Full Time: (7) Portobello vs. Hawick Linden (17)
This was a game that Portobello should have won and the players and coaching staff were bitterly disappointed. The common feeling amongst the support was that Portobello suffered from 'white line fever' and were too frantic when in good scoring positions. The only consolation is that Hawick visit again in two weeks on league buisness when Portobello will be looking for a reversal of the result. There were some notable performances for Portobello with the front five playing particularily well as a unit.
This weeks man of the match is Graham Culbertson. He took his try well and made a couple of big tackles that stopped Hawick from scoring again.
